RCMP are searching for this man after a home invasion in the Kings Heights area, Sept.26.

Police are looking for two suspects who forced themselves into an Airdrie home and robbed an unsuspecting homeowner, Sept. 26.

Mounties say a man knocked on the door of a home in King’s Heights at around 8:40 p.m., and when the homeowner answered, the two suspects forced their way in.

The suspects, who were armed with a handgun and what appeared to be a drywall saw, forced the homeowner to the floor, injuring him in the process.

The homeowner was robbed, but managed to flee the home.

The suspects fled on foot and were later tracked, with the help of RCMP Police Dog Services, to the Market Street commercial area.

Police believe the duo took off in a vehicle.

The homeowner required medical attention.

Constable Jason Curtis with the Airdrie RCMP said the incident was unusual.

“That level of violence is not common in the community and very concerning,” he said.

Curtis recommends people are cautious when answering their door, especially at night.

“I wouldn’t recommend opening your door to strangers in the evenings,” he said, noting youth are urged to never open the door unless in the presence of adults.

“If you see anything suspicious or are concerned, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.”

Mounties have released a composite sketch of one of the suspects. They urge the public to contact Airdrie RCMP with any information.

If you have information on any crime, contact Airdrie RCMP at 403-945-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or www.tipsubmit.com.

Calgary lowered 2016 property tax increase from 4.7 to 3.5 per cent

The City has lowered the 2016 property tax increase from 4.7 to 3.5 per cent, but some wonder if Calgarians should be happy with the amount of paring.

City Council voted Monday to approve the increase amount that will now raise taxes by $4.90 per month rather than $6.90.Tax increase Calgary

Amber Ruddy, Alberta director of the Canadian Federation for Independent Business, said the trim is a good thing, but the City should be holding the line.

“If they were serious about trimming back that property tax hike, they’d look at that biggest line item and think of that in the future as their renegotiating contracts with government employees,” Ruddy said.

Calgary’s Mayor was asked if the city could shrink the increase further.

Naheed Nenshi said that is simply how much money administration was able to find rather than reinvesting it into services through the economic downturn.

“They have determined that if we want to maintain the same level of service, which let’s not forget, 24,000 people last year told us that is what they wanted, that this was how much they needed in order to do it,” Nenshi said.

“It’s $2 a month, it’s not an enormous amount of money, but in these times, it’s an important symbol for us to send,” he said.

This is the first time in 10 years that administration has suggested lowering the increase.

Councillor Richard Pootmans said, when it comes to available city funds, how quickly a five per cent vacancy rate is filled, will have a big impact in the future.

“If the job vacancies are pushed out one, two and three months out, before we fill them, then in fact, a huge amount of that savings actually derives in terms of a tax rate decrease,” he said.

Toronto city councillor pens Rob Ford book, bound for shelves in October

The antics of Toronto politician Rob Ford have inspired yet another book – this time written by a fellow city councillor.

Random House Canada says John Filion’s The Only Average Guy: Inside the Uncommon World of Rob Ford will examine “what drives him, why he acts the way he does, what’s important to him.”

Filion was a journalist before entering municipal politics, and Random House says he developed an unlikely camaraderie with the wildly unpredictable councillor from Etobicoke.

Ford earned international notoriety for admitting he smoked crack cocaine during his term as mayor from 2010 to 2014, in addition to a host of other controversies involving racial slurs and drunken tirades.

Random House says the book reveals “a boy still longing for the approval of his father and struggling with the impossible expectations of a family that imagined itself a political dynasty.”

The Only Average Guy is available on Oct. 27.

“Like everyone else in the world, it seemed, I watched the unravelling of Mayor Rob Ford with fascinated, gob-smacked disbelief,” Anne Collins, vice president and publisher of Knopf Random House Canada, said Monday in a release.

“The reporters could barely keep up with what was happening when it came to the Fords. I, like a lot of people, kept asking, ‘How? Why?’ John Filion has answered those questions, eloquently, giving us an immensely important portrait of a troubled man, an ambitious family, and a shocking political culture that is still very much with us.”

Other books about Ford include Mark Towhey and Johanna Schneller’sMayor Rob Ford: Uncontrollable: How I Tried to Help the World’s Most Notorious Mayor (Skyhorse Publishing) and Robyn Doolittle’s Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story (Penguin Canada).

The images were taken from the craters of Palikir, Hale and Horowitz and Coprates Chasma, located in the southern hemisphere of Mars. They were analyzed pixel by pixel.

The water is salty and therefore does not freeze at low temperatures with the red planet  -70 0C(-94 degrees Fahrenheit). The proof of the existence of this liquid is for the presence of the called pecloratos, a mineral formations that look like stripes on hillsides and mountains.

¿Habitable planet?water on Mars02

“Today there is liquid water on the surface of Mars (…) Because of this, we suspect that there is at least a possibility that there is a habitable environment” said said Michael Meyer, director of the exploration program Mars, the “Guardian”.

“The presence of liquid water on Mars has astrobiology, geological and hydrological implications and can affect the future human exploration,” said scientists quoted by EFE.

During the presentation of the report it was not assured nor denied that there is life on that planet. Even the possibility of achieving grow greenhouse crops through slipped. However, it is still too early to determine if in the future we will inhabit Mars.
